MAEd in Literacy + Reading Endorsement: 30 Semester Hours
The focus of BW’s online MAEd in Literacy is on evaluation methods and instructional approaches, diagnostic and corrective reading methods, research in literacy education and a survey of literature appropriate for children and adolescents. Teachers will develop strategies to teach literacy more effectively and thereby enhance student achievement.
The courses can be taken independently for the PK-12 reading endorsement or be taken as part of the degree program. Students seeking an initial teaching license and master’s are required to complete both on-campus and online courses.
The program includes 100 hours of field experience, including a practicum in which students work with children who have been referred for reading difficulties. Students will evaluate, plan and implement remedial programs for them. The courses in the program are designed to produce an endorsement on the Ohio teaching certificate in PK-12 reading as established by the Ohio Department of Education.
Successful completion of Ohio Department of Education approved exam(s) is required for teachers to qualify for the PK-12 reading endorsement. The PK-12 reading endorsement meets Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee requirements. The endorsement positions teachers to assess, plan for and implement programs that increase students’ literacy skills. Teachers will have the credential along with the knowledge and skills needed to provide the intensive instruction for struggling students that is called for in the guarantee.
Ohio 12-hour Reading Core Requirement
In Ohio, teachers seeking the reading endorsement must complete the Ohio-mandated 12-hour reading core before enrollment. Early childhood education and middle childhood education teachers likely completed this reading core with their initial license.
PK-12 Reading Endorsement
PK-12 Reading Endorsement: 12 Semester Hours
Teachers may add the PK-12 reading endorsement to an existing license without completing an entire master’s degree. The PK-12 reading endorsement meets Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee requirements, and positions teachers to assess, plan for and implement programs that increase students’ literacy skills.
Teachers seeking the reading endorsement must complete the Ohio-mandated 12-hour reading core before enrollment. Successful completion of Ohio Department of Education approved exam(s) is also required for teachers to officially receive the PK-12 reading endorsement.
